Clearly there is a larger representation from the 1
st
group which means they are well established
in their businesses and business practices. Notable the SNUsacc board members are
representative of that group which makes sense due to the knowledge and experience they now
bring to the SNUsacc board.
The role of board members is to decide whether a client gets a loan or not. Generally, 1st and 2nd
phase loans are set amounts but 3rd and 4
th
phase loans are decided by the board. The ‘group’
has between 25 – 30 members but the cooperative is not limited in numbers. The ‘groups’ are the
co-guarantors as there is no collateral involved. SNUsacc has developed and implemented other
programmes such as: manufactured dugwells, sanitation programmes and literacy classes for
adults. The future aim of the HwH is to make these cooperative ‘groups’ and SNUsacc self-
sufficient with support when required.
When I was introduced to the above SNUsacc board members by Shila KC it became evident that
this role was valued by family members and community. The following commentary was
captured in the interviews.
Participant (4) commented, that she was, nominated by group cooperative members and
her husband’s view of her is better because she can help others and the cooperative.
Participant (7) commented that the community treat him well and sometimes community
quarrel and they come to him for advice.
HwH philosophy is that once the infrastructure is in place the community determines what their
needs are.
